Ink Monsters

Ink Monsters is a quick and light set collection and drafting game for the whole family, designed by Daryl Andrews and Erica Bouyouris.

My responsibilities included producing the logo, box design, card interface, rules, and promotional materials- under the guidance of Erik Dahlman with Albino Dragon (the publisher).

Ink Monsters provided an interesting challenge- we had a turnaround time of just a few weeks from start to finish, and the monsters were illustrated by a team in China, developed simultaneously as the rest of the graphics, with little communication between the two teams.

To keep the look cohesive, I did some minor color edits to the side banners of the cards on the fly, and stuck to having a limited color palette for the main graphical elements. Many of the monsters were thick and round, so I chose a typeface that shared some of the same elements.

Kickstarter & Marketing

As an independent publisher, Albino Dragon pulls a lot of their funding via crowdsourcing, namely from Kickstarter. Ink Monsters hit its funding target in a little over 24 hours and ended with almost twice its goal amount with 439 backers.

To assist potential backers in understanding the game, I laid out visual instructions for the gameplay. To hammer the family-friendly and light-hearted tone across with the campaign's graphics, I pulled the characters out of their cards and had them interact with the various rewards (or become the rewards themselves).

Albino Dragon also play-tested the game at various conventions, and caught the crowd's attention with a variety of print graphics I developed, including the banner pictured to the right.
